What is IAS 38 Intangible Assets?

IAS 38 sets criteria for recognising intangible assets such as licences, software and development costs, requiring identifiability, control and probable future economic benefits. Internally generated goodwill and most research costs cannot be capitalised. Recognised intangibles are amortised over their useful lives or, if indefinite, tested for impairment.
