What is Journal Entry?

A record of a single financial transaction in the accounting system, showing the accounts debited and credited, the amounts, the date and a description. Journal entries follow double-entry rules so debits equal credits, and they feed into the general ledger. Adjusting entries at period end capture items such as accruals, prepayments and depreciation.
