UAE Tax Invoice Requirements (VAT)
· 5 min read · By Aureus Worldwide
A tax invoice is more than a request for payment, under UAE VAT it is the document that entitles your customer to recover input tax and underpins your own records. Get the format wrong and the FTA can disallow your customer's claim or penalise you for issuing a non-compliant invoice. Yet invoice errors remain one of the most common VAT compliance failures, usually because a required field is missing or the wrong format was used. This guide sets out exactly what a valid UAE tax invoice must contain, under Federal Decree-Law No. 8 on VAT and its executive regulation.
Why the tax invoice is so important
The tax invoice is the evidence that VAT was correctly charged and is recoverable. For the buyer, no valid tax invoice generally means no input tax recovery. For the seller, issuing non-compliant invoices is itself a penalisable error. So the invoice protects both sides of the transaction, which is why the FTA is specific about its contents.
Full tax invoice: the mandatory fields
A full tax invoice must include:
- The words "Tax Invoice" clearly displayed
- The supplier's name, address and TRN (Tax Registration Number)
- The customer's name and address (and TRN, where they are registered)
- A unique, sequential invoice number
- The date of issue (and the date of supply if different)
- A description of the goods or services supplied
- The unit price, quantity and taxable amount per line
- Any discount applied
- The VAT rate and the VAT amount charged, in AED
- The gross total payable
If you invoice in a foreign currency, the VAT amount must still be shown in AED using an approved exchange rate.
Simplified tax invoice: when it is allowed
A simplified tax invoice is a shorter format permitted in defined situations, typically where the supply is below a value set by the FTA, or for retail sales to unregistered customers. It must still show:
- The words "Tax Invoice"
- The supplier's name, address and TRN
- The date of issue
- A description of the goods or services
- The total amount and the VAT amount (or a VAT-inclusive total with the tax shown)
It omits the buyer's details, which is why it suits high-volume retail. Use the full format whenever the simplified conditions are not met.
Full vs simplified at a glance
| Feature | Full tax invoice | Simplified tax invoice |
|---|---|---|
| "Tax Invoice" label | Required | Required |
| Supplier TRN | Required | Required |
| Customer name and details | Required | Not required |
| Sequential number | Required | Generally required |
| Line-level breakdown | Required | Summary acceptable |
| VAT amount in AED | Required | Required |
| When used | Standard B2B supplies | Low-value / retail to unregistered buyers |
The value threshold for using the simplified format is set by the FTA, so confirm the current figure before relying on it.
Timing: when must you issue it?
A tax invoice must be issued within the period the rules require after the date of supply (commonly counted in days). Issuing late, or not at all, is a compliance breach. Build invoice issuance into your sales process so it happens automatically at the point of supply rather than being chased later.
Credit and debit notes
When a supply changes after invoicing, a return, a discount, a correction, you adjust it with a tax credit note or tax debit note, not by editing the original invoice. These documents carry similar content requirements, reference the original invoice, and feed the VAT adjustment on your return. Keeping them is part of your record-keeping duty, covered in our VAT record-keeping guide.
Common invoice mistakes
- Omitting the supplier TRN or the words "Tax Invoice"
- Showing VAT only in a foreign currency, not AED
- Non-sequential or duplicated invoice numbers
- Using the simplified format above the permitted value
- No description of the goods or services
- Correcting errors by editing an invoice instead of issuing a credit note
Your customer's input tax recovery depends on the invoice you give them. A missing TRN or label can cost them the deduction, and cost you the relationship.
Rounding and the VAT amount
A small but frequently overlooked detail is rounding. The VAT amount shown on a tax invoice should be calculated and presented correctly, and where rounding is applied it must follow a consistent, acceptable method rather than being adjusted arbitrarily line by line. Small rounding inconsistencies across thousands of invoices can create reconciliation headaches at return time and look like errors in an audit. Configure your system to handle rounding uniformly so the VAT total on the invoice always agrees with the underlying calculation.
Make compliant invoicing automatic
The reliable fix is to configure your accounting or invoicing system so every required field is populated by default and numbering is sequential. Cloud platforms such as QuickBooks and Xero can be set up to produce compliant tax invoices every time. This also makes filing easier, as our VAT return filing guide shows. Because formats, thresholds and timing rules are set by the FTA and can change, confirm the current requirements before finalising your invoice templates.

Frequently asked questions
What must a UAE tax invoice contain?
A full tax invoice must show the words Tax Invoice, the supplier's name, address and TRN, the customer's details, a unique sequential number, the date, a description of the goods or services, the taxable amount, the VAT rate and the VAT amount, with totals in AED.
What is a simplified tax invoice?
A simplified tax invoice is a shorter format permitted for supplies below a value set by the FTA, or for retail sales to unregistered customers. It omits some buyer details but must still show the supplier's TRN, the date, a description and the VAT amount or a VAT-inclusive total.
Can I issue a tax invoice in a foreign currency?
You can invoice in another currency, but the VAT amount must also be shown in AED using an approved exchange rate. Keeping the AED VAT figure on the invoice is essential for the FTA and for your return.
